Valbruna local Anton Oitzinger was "not just an alpine guide in the
common meaning of the term, he had a complete and unique personality,
an eagle of the mountains". This is how Julius Kugy described his
favorite alpine guide in the Oitzinger's biography he wrote in 1924, titled
"Son of a Mountain". Oitzinger
often accompanied Kugy as they explored the unclimbed peaks of the Julian
Alps in the early 1900's and was his good friend for almost 50 years,
"
we always went hiking with a smile." Anton's house can
still be seen at the end of the street named after him, "Vicolo Oitzinger"
in the lower part of town.
