The “Abete di Risonanza” tree, Picea excelsa fissilis, is a rare type of spruce that can only be found in a few areas around the world including the valleys around Valbruna. This particular tree is used by violin makers all over the world to build the front part of the body of many string instruments like violins, cellos and guitars. It must grow slowly and consistently to generate tight concentric rings which will guarantee the sound quality of the instruments. Mr. Bruno Deotto, founder of the Deotto wood company in Valbruna is one of very few who could recognize a “good violin tree” just by looking at it. He taught this art to his son, Davide, who now carries forward the father’s passion for finding and preparing the wood parts sought by luthiers coming to Valbruna from all over the world.
